James is a research engineer with experience in finance, control systems, and machine learning. He worked previously as research engineer at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and as research professor at the university. Before JHU, he supported fraud strategy and model development at Synchrony Financial. He received his PhD in mathematics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and undergraduate degrees in math and philosophy from Notre Dame. He is interested in privacy in data and national security, especially as instanced in FISA 702, First Amendment protections in various media, and security of digital information. Hobbies include climbing, following SCOTUS, literature, and the performing arts. A native of Montana, James appreciates the outdoors, open skies, and fresh air.
